Ivory Coast Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed June 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling.
The cabin doors part and Abidjan's damp air folds over you like a blanket laced with sea salt and charcoal smoke drifting from curb-side grills. Immigration officers in sharp khaki uniforms meet you beneath humming fluorescents that bounce off freshly waxed floors; French and Dioula rise and fall in the arrival hall like background music. Most visitors sort their paperwork online before departure. Yet the final stamp still lands with that satisfying thud of rubber on passport paper. Queues flow. Officers ask two or three direct questions, voices steady above the clatter of luggage wheels and the sudden wail of a newborn. Keep your papers in hand: passport, printed visa or e-visa confirmation, yellow-fever certificate, onward ticket. After baggage claim a last customs desk waits, and through the glass the scent of sliced pineapple and warm yam chips hints at the flavors beyond. Budget up to 45 minutes from touchdown to curb, longer when several wide-bodies land together. ATMs dispensing West African CFA francs flank the exit corridor, choose the machines marked "Visa" if your card carries foreign transaction fees. Outside, the sky feels broader, washed in mango-orange at dusk, and the breeze carries the low growl of moto-taxis beneath the smell of grilled tilapia drifting from nearby maquis. Ivory Coast's entry routine is smooth for the prepared and punishing for the careless, so check every document before you board.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Ivory Coast runs a three-tier entry system: visa-free for select African neighbors, e-visa for most Western visitors, and embassy visa for a handful of nationalities. Applications are processed entirely online except for the diplomatic route.

Visa-Free Entry
90 days

Citizens of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and a few partner countries may enter without prior arrangements.

Includes
Benin Burkina Faso Cape Verde Gambia Ghana Guinea Guinea-Bissau Liberia Mali Niger Nigeria Senegal Sierra Leone Togo Chad Mauritania Morocco Tunisia

Entry stamp issued on arrival. Ensure passport validity exceeds six months.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
90 days single-entry or 30 days multiple-entry

Most travelers from North America, Europe, Oceania, and parts of Asia apply for an e-visa before departure.

Includes
United States Canada United Kingdom Australia New Zealand Germany France Spain Italy Netherlands Belgium Portugal Switzerland Japan South Korea India China Brazil Mexico
How to Apply: Apply at https://snedai.com; upload passport bio page and photo. Pay online; receive approval letter within three working days. Print and present on arrival.
Cost: Moderate fee payable by card

Approval letter must match passport exactly. Extensions possible in Abidjan.

Visa Required
30 to 90 days depending on visa type

A small group of countries must secure a visa from an Ivorian embassy or consulate before travel.

How to Apply: Apply in person or by courier at the nearest Ivorian embassy. Supply invitation letter, proof of funds, and onward ticket. Processing takes five to seven working days.

List changes occasionally. Confirm with embassy if your nationality is not listed above.

Arrival Process

Landing at Félix-Houphouët-Boigny International Airport in Abidjan is efficient if you arrive prepared. Follow the signs marked 'Arrivées' past duty-free perfume counters wafting sweet hibiscus and oud scents toward immigration desks.

1
Health Check
First queue: officers in white coats check yellow-fever certificates and may scan for elevated temperature. The faint odor of disinfectant lingers in the warm corridor.
2
Immigration Control
Present passport, e-visa approval or visa, and arrival card. Officers stamp beside the visa sticker with a satisfying click.
3
Baggage Claim
Conveyor belts rumble. Porters in orange vests offer assistance amid the echoing calls of arriving families.
4
Customs Inspection
Choose green (nothing to declare) or red (goods to declare) channel; occasional sniffer dogs pad past, noses twitching at the scent of fresh cola nuts in travelers' bags.
5
Exit to Arrivals Hall
Final glass doors slide open to reveal humid night air, the sound of idling engines, and the sweet aroma of fried alloco plantain from nearby kiosks.

Documents to Have Ready

Passport
Must be valid at least six months beyond arrival date with two blank pages.
Visa or e-Visa Approval
Print the e-visa approval letter on A4 paper. Small fonts may be rejected.
Yellow Fever Certificate
Original yellow booklet showing vaccination at least ten days before entry.
Return or Onward Ticket
Printed confirmation of departure within allowed stay period.
Hotel Booking or Invitation Letter
Name and address where you will spend your first night in Ivory Coast.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Keep small denominations of euros or dollars for the visa-on-arrival lane in case of unexpected fees.
Have a pen ready. Arrival cards are distributed on the plane but never enough for everyone.
Photocopy your passport and vaccination card. Officers sometimes retain originals for verification.

Customs & Duty-Free

Ivory Coast customs regulations balance openness for tourists with protection of local agriculture and culture. Declare anything that feels questionable. Penalties for undeclared electronics or currency are swift.

Tobacco
200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 g loose tobacco
Only for personal use. Excess is taxed heavily.

Up to 1,000,000 CFA francs or equivalent without declaration
Larger sums must be declared on arrival form. Keep exchange receipts.

Value up to 50,000 CFA francs duty-free
Electronics over this limit attract 25 percent duty.
